Sheriff's Officers Find Heroin, Cocaine, Pot In Paterson Taxi Stop

PATERSON, N.J. -- A passenger in a cab whose driver failed to signal a turn had a dozen bundles of heroin, several bags of crack and more than an ounce of pot -- all individually packaged for sale, the Passaic County sheriff said.

Officer Jason Michaels pulled the cabbie over on Broadway near Auburn Street in Paterson just after 3 am. Sunday, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.

He immediately arrested the back-seat passenger, identified as 18-year-old old Tawan Grier, after finding him carrying a clear plastic bag containing 44 smaller zip-locking baggies of marijuana, Berdnik said.

Corporal Craig Goodson, who assisted with Officers Mohammad Abaza and Reymy Rodriguez, found a dozen envelopes of heroin stamped "POWER" and seven "buckets" of crack cocaine on the floor, he said.

Grier also had nearly three dozen clear empty bags used to package drugs for sale, the sheriff said.

The driver was released with a traffic summons, the sheriff said.

Grier, meanwhile, was sent to the Passaic County Jail. where he remained held on drug charges Monday.
